Your Digital First Impression – LinkedIn & Personal Branding 101

In today’s job market, your first impression often happens before you even know it. Before you get an interview, before someone reads your CV—chances are, they’ve Googled you. And what do they find? A dusty Facebook profile? Nothing at all? Or a powerful LinkedIn page that screams: “This is someone worth hiring”? If it’s not the last one, it’s time to fix that. Your online presence is your modern CV—and it’s one of the easiest ways to get noticed.

Let’s start with the basics. If you don’t have a LinkedIn profile yet, create one today. It’s not just for managers and corporate types anymore—it’s a free, digital billboard for job seekers. And in South Africa, more and more recruiters use LinkedIn to search for talent, especially in fields like marketing, IT, finance, education, HR, and even trades.

Your profile photo doesn’t need to be a professional studio shoot—but it should be clear, friendly, and distraction-free. Think of what you’d wear to an interview. No selfies in the car, no party pics. Then, craft a strong headline. Don’t just write “Job Seeker” or “Unemployed Graduate.” Instead, say something like:
“Marketing Graduate | Skilled in Social Media Strategy & Content Creation | Open to Work”
This tells people who you are, what you can do, and what you’re looking for.

Next is your About section—think of it as your elevator pitch. Use short paragraphs to introduce who you are, your background, what you’re passionate about, and what kind of roles you’re looking for. Keep it genuine and clear. This is your story, so own it.

List your experience, skills, and education. Even if your experience is from part-time jobs, volunteering, or freelancing—it all counts. Be specific. “Volunteered at youth NGO” is okay, but “Planned and led weekly tutoring sessions for 30 high school learners in Diepsloot” is better.

Now, here’s the secret weapon: engage. Comment on industry posts, follow companies you admire, and share your own insights or experiences. This positions you as active, not desperate. Use the #OpenToWork tag and turn on “open to job opportunities” under your profile settings so recruiters can find you more easily.
